MINDFULNESS IN THE CLASSROOM

Our programme director and founding member Veronica Winterbourne has worked in schools and colleges around the country teaching and working as a counsellor and counselling supervisor. We now know so much more about the harmful effects of stress on the developing brain. Mindfulness training is not an optional add on, it is essential to protect the developing brain from the negative effects of excessive stress.

OUR PROGRAMME FOR PUPILS AND TEACHERS

We work with you to integrate the programme into your curriculum with the minimum of disruption to existing schedules we offer a course that is sustainable in the long term, one that is going to make a difference to the lives of pupils and enhance the experience of teachers on a day-to-day basis. We have devised a programme which is easy to implement, but which offers long-term benefit. In conjunction with our pupils programme we offer a series of trainings for teachers (and parents). This essential life skill can then be experienced and modelled so our children can also learn through mirroring.

THE BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS IN SCHOOL

  • 1

  • After a thirty-minute session once a week, with ten minutes practice every day, teachers report a calmer atmosphere in the classroom, better concentration and more openness, with children becoming kinder, more confident and less judgemental.

  • 2

  • Mindfulness interventions have been shown to improve the mental, emotional, social and physical health and wellbeing of the young people who take part.

  • 3

  • Mindfulness can reduce stress, anxiety, reactivity and bad behaviour, improve sleep and self esteem and bring about greater calmness and the ability to manage behaviour and emotions, self-awareness and empathy.

  • 4

  • Mindfulness helps young people pay greater attention, be more focused, think in more innovative ways, use existing knowledge more effectively, improve working memory and enhance planning, problem solving and reasoning skills.

  • 5

  • Mindfulness is relatively inexpensive and can fit around existing schedules and above all is enjoyable and civilising for both pupils and staff.

At the Evolutionaries we are dedicated to sharing the benefits of the physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing that meditation and mindfulness offers.
